A big part in this was played by geography & pattern of settlements. Iran is basically a mountainous and desert region with few tracts of fertile land around which settlements agglomerated. This leads to centralization and urbanization, and also allow invading armies https://t.co/JxttqjKhOp

to go from one agglomeration to another meticulously converting or genociding them. This has also been true in India where geography favored agglomerations . Kambhoja and Gandhara were ethnically cleansed of Hindus by Islamic armies in very short time.

Even Kashmir's total Islamization was possible due to its agglomeration of majority of its population in valleys. In contrast to this, Indo-Gangetic plains are fertile rolling plains of 700,000 Sq Km area. Since whole plains are fertile, it leads to dispersal of population

and make genociding difficult. This; apart from high baseline population, inability of Muslims to firmly secure their power, and Hindus being a source of slaves and taxes; was a reason why genocide campaigns were not very successful in later states. There are other major factors

One would be that at the time of arrival of Islam, Zoroastrianism was a failing religion and was losing land to Christians & Buddhists, while Hinduism was very vibrant and upbeat at that time, and has just achieved monopoly in Indian subcontinent. This means that Iranians bolted

easily at first indication of material discomfiture. Another reason for India remaining Hindu is that Hindus were immunized due to gradual exposure of Islam in Western and Northern reaches. Pratiharas, Chauhans, and Gahadwals despised Turshkas (Muslims).

Muslims failed in their first attempt (Arabs) outside Sindh,& Ghaznavids failed at holding their occupations outside Gandhara & Kambhoja (where they have ethnically cleansed natives). This lack of initial success played a big role in limiting Islam as it shortened time of exposure

and developed immunity. The fact that Islamic rule was never complete in India also played a role as Muslims could not devote too much military strength for Dawa as they have to use it for wars.Had there been an attack when army was doing Dawa, they would have lost their kingdom.

Caste system also played a big role in limiting spread of Islam, because unless you are converting whole caste, the person converting lose all social support and marriage prospects (Ashrafs were unwilling to give their daughters to a Azlaf or Arzal convert).

Thus caste system, social boycotts, and khaps ensured that people won't defect for sake of material gains. Another reason (probably spurred by Islam) is rise in devotional cults in Hinduism. I consider them as inferior version of Hinduism as they champion devotion over conduct

and higher civilizational ideals, but these kind of cults have much better popularity among masses. Not everyone could be Raja Bhoj.Devotional cult strengthens hold of religion among people not inclined towards philosophy, by providing them psychological comfort. They are therupatic
