Baji Rao's general Malhar Rao prepared to achieve this Maratha dream of restoring the temple of Vishveshvara which lies beneath the Gyanvapi ("mosque").He camped in Benares(Kashi) and intended to bring down the structure but locals, fearing retaliation, requested him to desist.
