The real name of Aligarh was Ramgarh. It was founded by Rajputs in antiquity had a fort of great renown named Koil.
In late 18th century, a Shia commander named Najaf Khan renamed the city as Aligarh. Interestingly, even in 19th century, non Muslims only knew of it as "Ramgarh" pic.twitter.com/p4pXw7eCYk

The snippet comes from Ratan Singh Bhangoo's Guru Panth Prakash written in 19th century and describes Abdali's battle with Jats in 18th century . Interestingly, Bhangoo says that Hindus of his age still referred to Aligarh as "Ramgarh".
