After the discovery of the Rabatak Inscription in 1993 in Afghanistan which dealt with the reign of Kushan Emperor Kanishka, the chronology of the Kushan Dynasty is much better understood.

Note that in the Rabatak Inscription, Kanishka announces that he is replacing the Ionian language in use before by his own "Arya" language.
The emperor is called "devaputra".

He doesn't call himself a Shaka, शक. So the effort to see him as connected with the Shaka Era was misconceived.
