The oral tradition among Sikhs from Fatehgarh (and what I suspect is true) is that they were bricked alive, but still refused to budge on their position – so their throats were slit after the brick platform was built around them. Perhaps censored because of how graphic it is

According to tradition, they cut out his sons heart and thrust it into his mouth, before torturing him by ripping his skin off and gouging his eyes out (not willingly). Will try finding a written source that it can be traced to
