On 22 June 1897, the Diamond Jubilee of the coronation of Queen Victoria, Rand and his military escort
Lt. Ayerst were shot while returning from the celebrations at Government House. Both died, Ayerst on the spot and Rand of his wounds on 3 July.
The #ChapekarBrothers & 2 accomplices were charged with the murders in various roles, as well as the shooting of two informants and an attempt to shoot a police officer. All 5 were found guilty and hanged, another, then a schoolboy, was sentenced to 10 yrs rigorous imprisonment.

It was around 1896 and 97 when Plague had reached Pune & caused havoc..
Rand had initially provided some relief—establishing a hospital, quarantine camps, in addition to disinfecting affected areas.
However, these initiatives soon paved the way for more brutal steps that would rip the dignity of the affected families,
He deployed forces who had full authority to barge into any house and upset the belongings. The troops stripped men, women and children naked for “check-ups”, sometimes even in public and evacuated them to hospitals or quarantined them. At times they also destroyed property without due permission.
And thus the three brothers were heavily inspired by conservative ideologies and a sense of rebellion against the British.
Inspired by the strong language that Balgangadhar Tilak used in his newspaper “Kesari” they decided to take action and bring down Rand who had ashamed hundreds of families in Pune.
On 18/04/1898 the eldest of Bhajan Singing Brahmins of Chapekar Clan #DamodarHariChapekar was hanged by the British.
The younger brother #BalakrishnaHariChapekar
who had absconded was betrayed by his friend & the British caught him & executed on 12/05/1899.
VasudevHariChapekar was executed on 08/05/1899 & Mahadev Vinayak Ranade on 10/05/1899 for being an accomplice
& killing police informants.
KhandoVishnuSathe the juvenile bomber got 10 years rigorous imprisonment.
Neither Gandhi Nehru, nor their Charka got us freedom, it was the sacrifice of these unheard revolutionaries who never let the spirit of freedom struggle die and ensured that there will be always another batch to continue the fight till Bharath attains independence.
