The Nambi Story

On 30th Nov 1994, A news created sensation in India. Top Rocket Scientist of India Nambi Narayan who was working in ISRO was arrested from Kerala by IB and Kerala Police.

He was charged to sell important drawing n documents related to cryogenic engine to Pakistan nuclear scientist Mohd Aslam via two Maldivian women.
He was interrogated by IB Kerala director RB Srikumar n DG Kerala Police Sibi Mathews.

Media was calling him anti national, People were burning his effigy. He was the most hated person that time in India. Police beat him mercilessly, tortured him. He was kept standing for days, food was not given; didn’t allow to sleep, kept naked, chili powder was inserted in his anus. Police did all this with a 53 year old renowned scientist of India.

2 Maldivian women were also arrested n subordinate of NN had confessed their crime n they wanted to Nambi also to confess his crime that he sold drawings of engine to Pak.

Nambi kept saying only one thing I didn’t sell anything to anyone n how someone can make cryogenic engine just by drawings?

Nambi born in 1941 at TN. He was a very brilliant student since childhood

He received NASA fellowship n pursued his MTech in Princeton University. He completed his master’s program there in chemical rocket propulsion under Professor Luigi Crocco in a record ten months.

Despite being offered a job in the US, Nambi returned to India with expertise in liquid propulsion at a time when Indian rocketry was still dependent on solid propellants
Narayanan introduced the liquid fuel rocket technology in India in the early 1970s when A. P. J. Kalam’s team was working on solid motors. He foresaw the need for liquid fuelled engines for ISRO’s future civilian space programmes, and received encouragement from the then ISRO chairman Satish Dhawan. Nambi was genius; he started to fork on liquid technology.

In 1992, India signed an agreement with Russia for transfer of technology to develop cryogenic fuel-based engines and procurement of two such engines for ₹ 235 crore. However, it did not materialize after the US president George H. W. Bush wrote to Russia, raising objections against the transfer of technology and even threatening to blacklist the country. Russia, under Boris Yeltsin, succumbed to the pressure and denied the technology to India.
To bypass this monopoly, India signed a new agreement with Russia to fabricate four cryogenic engines alongside two mockups for a total of US$9 million. Russia was supposed to send parts in 4 rounds. By Oct 1994, Russia had sent 3 parts n 4th was expected in Dec 1994.

On 20th Oct, India has successfully tested the PSLV engine under Nambi n was ready to use it on commercial satellites projects that cud have put India in way ahead of space technology.

America never wanted India to develop this technology.

In Oct 1994, A police officer Vijayan arrested 2 Maldivian women: Mariam Rasheeda and Fauzia Hassan in charge of overstaying in India.
Marium said that she came to India for treatment of her daughter.

According to Marium, Police officer Vijayan asked her to have sex with him that she denied after that he arrested her n through her diary he got the number of ISRO scientist Sasikumaran. Sasikumaran wife was doctor n doing treatment of daughter of Marium. Vijayan called Sasikumar for interrogation. From here conspiracy started.
Narsimha Rao was the PM of India that time and Congress leader Karunakaran was CM of Kerala.
CIA wanted to stop India’s cryogenic program at any cost.

Another side, 2 Congress leaders AK Antony and Oman Chandi who were close to Sonia Gandhi wanted to remove Karunakaran. N they grabed this opportunity.
IB Team of SB Srikumar n Kerala Police under Sibi Mathews arrested Maldivian women Marium n Fauzia n beat them mercilessly and asked them to confess they were selling space secret to Pakistan and Isro scientist were selling them secret. Then they arrested Sasikumaran n beat him also n forced him to take name of Nambi.
Srikumar also having personal animosity with Nambi

Media specially Malayala manorama giving cover to Police in this operation by publishing sensational articles.
They tortured Nambi to take name of his head Muthunayagam and also any Muslim- APJ Abdul Kalam or any one so that they can create perfect link with Pakistan but Nambi didn’t take any name
Soon case was handed over to CBI n CBI found that there r lot of loopholes in case. After spending 50 days in Jail. Nambi got bail in Jan 1995. Later in May 1996 CBI gave clean chit to all accused and said entire case was fabricated but despite of it CIA and Antony won.

India’s PSLV program went on hold. Current technology cud have been developed 20 years ago. KK resigned n Chandi became CM. Kerala govt went against CBI report but in 1998 Supreme Court clearly said that case against Nambi was fabricated.

All the other accused scientist lived ordinary life.
In 2001 Human Rights commission asked Kerala govt to give Rs 10 lac to Nambi that Kerala govt never gave to him
Sonia Gandhi made AK Antony defense minister of India from 2006-14.

SB Srikumar who was also loyal to Sonia kept getting promotion n sent to Gujarat to settle Modi.
Sibi Mathews was made Chief Information Office r of Kerala after retirement by Oman Chandi in 2011
Nambi kept fighting for his dignity,

his time changed after 2014. In 2018 Supreme court asked Kerala Govt to give him Rs 1 crore and investigate role of all 17 police officers who framed him falsely.
In 2019, Modi govt gave him Padam Bhushan

Russian space writer Brian Harvey wrote about ISRO spy case in his book and said that it was America’s conspiracy to stop India’s space program. USA was selling commercial satellite at Rs 900 crore and India cud make same at Rs 235 crore if nambi had developed that engine.

Nambi named it Vikas engine.

Who were those politicians who orchestrated this entire conspiracy that took India 20 year behind ?

These questions are still unanswered.

This thread is based on various media reports and book How India and I survived the ISRO spy case.
